Generally, you can use rechargeable batteries in a metal detector. These batteries are rechargeable over and over again. They also don’t change or affect the performance of your device either.

Metal detectors are ideal for finding metal in the ground, but they also have one major drawback: they need a power source. Problems could arise when you’re hunting for treasure in remote properties or exploring abandoned buildings.

Most metal detectors come with a set of batteries, but I recommend buying rechargeable batteries to save money in the long term. A typical pair of alkaline batteries last about 41-51 hours on average, meaning you would have to change them weekly.

Rechargeable batteries, on the other hand, usually rate at about 500 charges before their capacity exhausts. They should last for several years or more with proper care and storage.

The main benefit of rechargeable batteries is cost savings over time, as they can be recharged and used many times. They also provide a much better value than alkaline batteries overall since you would have to purchase several of them to equal the lifespan of just one rechargeable battery pack.

Rechargeable batteries are also relatively quick to charge up, so it is easy enough for hobbyists who only want to use their metal detectors on the weekends.

There are a few drawbacks of rechargeable batteries that you should appreciate before making your purchase decision. They may not provide as many power cycles if they discharge too much or overheat during operation.

If this happens, it will take several charging sessions to get them to full capacity. It’s also possible for them to lose their charge more quickly than alkaline batteries if you don’t use them regularly, so you may need to keep them in a battery charger or occasionally replace your detector’s batteries.

Rechargeable batteries can be the best choice when it comes time to power your metal detector, but you should weigh all of the options before making a final decision.


Rechargeable VS Alkaline VS Lithium Batteries – How To Choose?

Rechargeable batteries are much more expensive than alkaline or lithium. However, you can keep recharging them instead of trashing them whenever their charge depletes.

They’re also better for the environment because you don’t have to throw them in the garbage after every single time you use them, like with alkali batteries.

However, rechargeable batteries don’t last as long as alkaline or lithium ones do, and they lose their charge faster when not in use.

There are also different kinds of rechargeable batteries that you need to consider before buying them for your device:

  • Nickel-cadmium (NiCd)
  • Nickel metal hydride (NiMH)
  • Lithium-ion (Li-ion)


NiCd rechargeables are still widely used globally, but they’re not as good as NiMH or Li-ion batteries because of how toxic cadmium is to humans. In addition, these types can’t handle deep discharges as alkaline batteries can.

They also need to be fully discharged regularly, or they lose their charge quickly.

Li-ion batteries are the best kind, but they’re also more expensive than NiMH and NiCd batteries. They can handle deep discharges without losing their charge as alkaline ones do too.

Thus, they’re suitable for low-drain devices that don’t last a long time as remote controls.

They last the longest of all three types but don’t expect the high-capacity ones to recharge more than 1000 times before they start losing their maximum voltage. They continuously lose potency faster than low-voltage batteries.

Some will stop after only 100 charges too, and you’ll suffer a loss.

NiMH rechargeables are the most common because they’re relatively inexpensive and can handle deep discharges like alkaline batteries.

They also have high capacities that will last for hundreds of charges before beginning to lose their maximum voltage at 1000-2000 times or more!

However, you should always use intelligent chargers with these types because they can overcharge if you don’t, ultimately reducing their lifespan.

Keep in mind that NiMH rechargeables are much heavier than alkaline ones too.

Rechargeable batteries come in a range of prices, and it’s important to consider whether you’re looking for an inexpensive option or prefer premium options with cutting-edge capabilities.

Additionally, while some batteries might be more expensive initially, considering their ability to receive multiple charges, they might prove to be more cost-efficient in the long run.


  • Durability

Rechargeable batteries often entail materials that don’t wear down with ease, increasing their lifespan.

They also tend to have a longer lifespan than other types of batteries, so while they may initially be more expensive, they will last longer and save you money in the long run.


  • Power/Capacity

Depending on how often you use your product or device that uses batteries, it’s crucial to consider whether its battery has enough power to meet your needs before depleting the charge.

You also need to ensure that your new set of rechargeable batteries is capable of holding a charge long enough to get you through your day.


  • Efficiency

Rechargeable batteries tend to hold their charges better than other types, meaning they’ll not lose power while sitting on the shelf or in storage.

You also want to be sure it’s easy for you to take apart and put together the new batteries. It would also help to check if they are compatible with your device.



Rechargeable batteries are much better for the environment than alkaline ones, but not all are rechargeable hundreds of times before becoming useless.
